Problem Gambling in South Africa Down From 2003

It has been reported in a study that the number of people in South Africa who have gambling problems has dropped in the past two years.

The study showed that the number of adults with immediate access to casinos and who also had gambling problems dropped from 6.8 in 2003 to 4.8 percent most recently in 2005.

The research was commissioned by the National Responsible Gambling Programme or NRGP, emerging from a national problem gambling prevalence study conducted over the past year by the National Centre for the Study of Gambling.

The project surveyed 3,003 South African adults who has easy access to commercial gambling, those living in the country's major urban areas.

The National Gambling Board has come out recently with a research which showed results similar to the said study. It also showed that the number of people with gambling problems has decreased in the past two years.

The NRGP is keen on raising public awareness about the risks involved in gambling, and has an extensive program on the issue.

NRGP Executive Director, Prof. Peter Collins said, "Taking from these findings, it is safe for the NRGP to say the majority of South Africans, including the poor, are gambling sensibly."
